MS Braemar, a transatlantic cruise ship carrying 682 passengers from the United Kingdom, found itself momentarily stranded. Five of the cruise’s passengers had tested positive for the coronavirus. Several dozen more passengers and crew members were in isolation after exhibiting flu-like symptoms. The ship had been rebuffed from several ports of entry throughout the Caribbean. According to sources in the British government who spoke to CNN, the UK then reached out to both the United States and Cuba “to find a suitable port for the Braemar”.

CUBA not only prides itself on having a rate of 8.5 doctors per thousand inhabitants, one of the best in the world, but also because “due to the values of solidarity and humanism that characterize us, from 1963 to the present, 407,000 health professionals have been present in 164 countries on all continents. Currently, there are more than 29,000 in 66 nations,” Cuban Public Health Minister, Dr. José Ángel Portal Miranda, recently noted on speaking at the 72nd session of the World Health Assembly, held in Geneva, Switzerland, May 20 through 28.

There are 95 Cuba solidarity associations working to strengthen ties of friendship with the island, across 45 countries in Africa and the Middle East, according to José Prieto Cintado, vice president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), speaking with Granma International about the work undertaken by these groups last year.
 
In particular, Prieto, with a degree in International Political Relations, highlighted the Fifth Cuba-Africa Friendship and Solidarity Encounter, held June 5-7, 2017, in the city of Windhoek, Namibia.

Caracas.— A medical brigade of 120 Cuban collaborators will provide medical assistance to the population affected by floods in Guasdualito, capital of José Antonio Páez municipality, in the state of Apure.

The detachment formed of primarily specialists, comprehensive family medicine doctors, nurses and a complete surgical team, was presented with the Cuban flag by senior officials of the island’s medical mission in Venezuela, and since July 5 has been making its ways to affected region.
